Implementation of Trauma-specific Interventions in a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service

Abstract Exposure to childhood adversity is a prevalent and pressing issue due its established links with poor physical mental health outcomes across the lifespan. High rates of have been found within young people attending services, provision trauma-informed care trauma-specific therapies are therefore essential these services. Trauma-focused cognitive behaviour therapy (TF-CBT) an evidence-based intervention efficacy amongst traumatised children youth. The primary objective this study was evaluate effectiveness when implemented in Child Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS). Given that most youth receive community settings, it important determine whether treatments tested under controlled conditions can apply real world clinical practice. Specifically, aimed quantify number type adversities reported by clients receiving intervention; investigate associated improvements participants’ posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, general symptoms functioning; report contact CAMHS at 3 months 2 years post-treatment. Results showed were more likely experienced multiple traumatic events than single events, 100% experiencing suicidal thoughts. Treatment significant PTSD symptom severity symptoms. Many received ongoing support 3-month 2-year follow-ups, reflecting complex nature their issues need for maintain gains achieved during treatment.
